Renewed violence in the Central African Republic

The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) is concerned by the renewed communal violence that has recently occurred in Bangui and in other parts of the country. Several acts of barbarism were indeed committed.

Such setbacks contradict the calm environment that had allowed a smooth holding of the popular consultations in the vast majority of the country. Calm will return thanks to a gradual restoration of the State authority, an effort undertaken by the Government with the support of MINUSCA. The return to calm is undeniably a key contributor to a successful Bangui Forum.

MINUSCA has multiplied its interventions to address the current situation in accordance with its mandate to protect civilians, and urges national authorities to take appropriate measures to raise the level of security with a view to easing tensions significantly.

MINUSCA calls on all stakeholders to exercise restraint and to devote their energy and influence on the national reconciliation and social cohesion, both important prerequisite for a lasting peace in the Central African Republic.
