Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

UNPOS visits Somaliland to help advance peacebuilding efforts

On 23 November 2009, an UNPOS team led by Deputy SRSG Charles Petrie travelled to Hargeisa (Somaliland) to pursue contacts with the regional authorities and explore ways of strengthening working relations to advance peace in Somalia and the region. Discussions focused on possible opportunities for "Somaliland" to attend international forums to contribute to a broader understanding of the issues affecting the sub-region.
