United Nations Political Office for Somalia

Closure of UNPOS

The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS), established on 15 April 1995, supported the Federal Government’s peace and reconciliation efforts. Its mandate ended on 3 June 2013, with its responsibilities transferred to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

Workshop for the Somali Ministry of DDR

On 17 and 18 November 2009, UNPOS, in collaboration with UNDP, organised a two-day Disarmament Demobilisation and Rehabilitation (DDR) Workshop for the newly established Somali Ministry of DDR. The purpose of the workshop was to, among other issues, discuss the existing challenges of the Armed Groups in Somalia and have an overview of Lessons Learned from previous DDR processes that did not work. Day two of the workshop was utilised to support the Minister for DDR to draw a Roadmap/Action Plan for six months starting from January 2010. Other participants in the workshop included UNICEF and two representatives from the President's and Prime Minister's Offices, respectively.
