During the opening of the training course on Tuesday 28 May, Mouna Amidou of UNOCI's Human Rights Office in Tai told participants: "The training of the guarantors of the laws and regulation of the republic is not a chance event because every time these rights are violated or flouted, we witness a situation of conflict."
The legal adviser at the military HQ, Adjutant Berthe Nanourou, explained the importance of capacity-building stating: "This training was not optional but an obligation. Henceforth the requirement for participation in all external missions, for example the Ivorian Army support for the UN mission in Mali will include knowledge of human rights and international humanitarian law as a priority."
The Prefect of the district of Taï, Aka Kasy Bio said he appreciated the transfer of knowledge that would enable course participants to efficiently accomplish their duties. "I praise the foresightedness of the UN System in making every effort to ensure we succeed in our duty toward the welfare of our people," he said.
