Burundi: The UN is ready to provide the necessary support for the cause of peace

The United Nations system in Burundi, in collaboration with the government, commemorated the 70th anniversary of the creation of the United Nations on Tuesday, October 27, 2015, in Bujumbura. On this occasion, UN officials reiterated the support of the United Nations system for peace and development initiatives in the country.

In his speech, the UN Resident Coordinator in Burundi reminded that this commemoration comes at a time when the country is going through a phase of political and security turbulence. Mr. Agostinho Zacarias took the opportunity to make a passionate appeal to the country's leaders "to redouble their efforts to ensure the security, tranquility, and respect for the rights of all its citizens. The United Nations will provide all necessary support to restore total peace in Burundi," he said.

He also pointed out that the distinction between national and international is increasingly fading, making unilateral challenges the challenges of all, in the spirit of global citizenship.

Mr. Agostinho Zacarias then expressed the hope that the Burundians would come together with greater determination to build a safer and more sustainable future for both present and future generations of the country.

It should be noted that to mark this event, various United Nations agencies organized an exhibition fair on the work of the United Nations in Burundi.

The various UN Agencies, Funds, and Programs, both resident and non-resident in Burundi, once again affirmed that they would spare no effort in supporting the country to improve the living conditions of its population.
