Lieutenant General Humphrey Nyone

Force Commander

Cavalry officer who joined the Zambian army in 1994, Lieutenant General Humphrey Nyone was appointed MINUSCA Force Commander by the UN Secretary-General on 15 May 2023.

A distinguished General with over 29 years' experience in the Zambian Armed Forces, he has risen through the ranks at both operational and strategic unit level. Prior to his appointment, he was Commander of the Staff College, where he was responsible for the pedagogical supervision and imparting of knowledge to trainee officers in military strategy, as well as directing the development of the College's strategic plans and budgets. As Commander of the Staff College of the Zambian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General H. Nyone was instrumental in planning a number of military exercises, such as "Southern Accords", in collaboration with the United States Africa Command (US AFRICOM).

He was also successively Commander of the 1st Infantry Division, Director General of Policy, Doctrine and Strategy of the Army HQ, Commander of the 6th Armored Brigade, Commander of the 64th Armored Regiment and Commander of the Armored School.

Lieutenant General H. Nyone also has experience of peacekeeping operations. He was a Military Observer, then DDRR Officer within MONUC in the Democratic Republic of Congo from 2006 to 2007, and Chief of Operations for the first Zambian Battalion of UNAMSIL in Sierra Leone from 2001 to 2002.

Lieutenant General H. Nyone holds a master’s degree in business administration and a Master's degree in Defense and Security Studies from the University of Lusaka, Zambia. He is a doctoral candidate in Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Lusaka. He is also a graduate of the War College of the U.S. Army Command and Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and of the Staff College of the Zambian Armed Forces.

Awarded a dozen national and international medals, he is married with five children.

   

MAJOR GENERAL MAYCHEL ASMI

Deputy Force Commander

Major General Maychel ASMI, was appointed Deputy Force Commander for the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) in April 2025, succeeding Major General Luiz MONSANTO from Portugal. With a distinguished military career spanning over three (03) decades, Major General Maychel ASMI, brings extensive leadership, operational, and multinational Peacekeeping experience to the Mission.

A graduate of Indonesia’s Military Academy, Major General Maychel ASMI, has held various command and staff appointments within the Indonesian Armed Forces, including positions in both Operational and Strategic capacities, with a command experience of leading International Forces. Major General Maychel ASMI served as the Commander of the Indonesian Battalion (INDOBATT) under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in 2014. During his tenure, he led Garuda 23-H Contingent in the Blue Line area, around Al ADEISEI, South Lebanon, with a focus in Peacekeeping, through community engagement and conflict de-escalation near the Blue Line. His strategic thinking was evident in his coordination with UN agencies, local authorities, and regional actors to prevent escalation and uphold Mission Mandates.

Distinguished and capable General ASMI served as Chief of Operations at Indonesia Army Strategic Command (KOSTRAD) in 2023 to 2024 and previously as Joint Exercise Assistant Officer at Indonesia Armed Forces Headquarters Operations Staff in 2022 to 2023, where he played a focal role in the Super Garuda Shield Exercise in 2023, coordinating joint exercises with 19 nations. As Regiment Commander of Region Military Command XII/Tanjungpura in 2022, and Notably as Chief Operations of Regional Military Command II/Sriwijaya in 2019 to 2021, where he led a Joint effort to Counter Forest fires in Sumatra implementing a “Pentahelix” approach. This approach uses close collaboration of government agencies, businesses, academics, local communities, and media under one banner ensuring a comprehensive approach, to combat a National Disaster.

Beyond his field of operations, General ASMI attended Commander School at Nanjing Army Command College in China, and Senior Command at Indonesian Army War College in Bandung, Indonesia. He also has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, and a Master’s degree in Defence Management, where he wrote a thesis in modernizing training systems and integrating peacekeeping scenarios into national doctrine.

Major General Maychel Asmi was born in Pekanbaru - Indonesia. He is happily married with two sons.
