Statement by SRSG Volker Perthes on the International Youth Day

Khartoum, 12 August 2022

On the occasion of the International Youth Day, I would like to congratulate the young women and men of Sudan. They bear the brunt of the current political, economic and social crisis; they are the main victims of violence; and they are at the forefront of the struggle for a better Sudan. I am inspired by their courage and resilience. Their voices need to be heard and amplified with support from national and international stakeholders.

There will be no sustainable peace, development, and democracy in Sudan without the effective and meaningful participation of Sudanese young women and men. I call on Sudanese stakeholders to take further steps to protect and advance the rights of Sudanese youth and create a more conducive environment for their active participation and empowerment.

UNITAMS, in line with its mandate, will continue to work closely with Sundanese young women and men to support the fulfilment of their aspirations and building partnerships for the realization of their full potential.
