Closure of UNMIS
The United Nation Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) concluded its mandate on 9 July 2011, coinciding with South Sudan’s independence, transitioning to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to support the new nation’s stability and development.
UNMIS strongly condemns the burning and looting currently being perpetrated by armed elements in Abyei town.
The United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS) was established on 24 March 2005 to support implementation of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, provide humanitarian assistance, and the protection and promotion of human rights.
