The United Nation Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) concluded its mandate on 9 July 2011, coinciding with South Sudan’s independence, transitioning to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to support the new nation’s stability and development.

Groundbreaking ceremony at site of future U.N. Headquarters in southern Sudan

JUBA – The site of the future headquarters of the United Nations in southern Sudan was formally inaugurated at a groundbreaking ceremony outside the regional capital of Juba this afternoon. The Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary-General for Sudan, Mr. Ashraf Qazi, attended the ceremony, which was hosted by the Regional Coordinator for Southern Sudan of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS), Mr. David Gressly. The Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) was represented by its Presidential Affairs Minister, Dr. Luka Biong Deng.
