CAR government reinforces military presence in Birao

ABOU MOUHILOU SEIDOU

Following the clashes which befell Birao (Vakaga prefecture) over recent months, the Government of the Central African Republic has reinforced the presence of its Armed Forces (FACA) in the area with 142 soldiers, in an effort to restore peace and stability in the region. The newly deployed troops arrived under the escort of the MINUSCA Zambian battalion from Gordil – they toured the town of Birao in a public show of solidarity, announcing their presence to the local population and seeking to reassure them.

The MINUSCA field office facilitated their welcome by the Sultan-Mayor of Birao, Moustapha Amgabo, who gave his blessing through sprinkling soil on the FACA troops, a local welcoming tradition. He also stated that the newly arrived FACA members will enhance security in the outskirts of Birao, ensure the protection of the local population and help maintain peace.

In full respect of Ministry of health measures to counter the coronavirus disease, the deployed troops followed the World Health Organization’s guidelines on the prevention of the pandemic upon arrival at their base. Zambian battalion health personnel conducted body temperatures checks on the troops and provided chlorinated water for hands washing.

Later, in presence of the MINUSCA Head of Office, Bessan Vikou, and the Zambian Contingent Commander, Colonel Teddy Tembo, the troops were addressed by the Birao Sub-Prefect, Zakariah Ramadan, who expressed his appreciation for their arrival and urged them to exercise professionalism while carrying out their duties.

The new arrivals will replace the previous batch of 50 soldiers in the area and will continue working towards the sustainability of the Weapons Free Zone (WFZ) directive already being implemented in Birao since 14 March 2020. Their presence will also improve the joint patrols with MINUSCA and enhance operational capacities.
