COVID-19: Sewing machines to support the making of face masks in Birao

As a response to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic in the Central African Republic (CAR), and specifically in Birao (North of the CAR), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through MINUSCA donated a number of items to the local women to curb the spread of the disease. The items donated included 100 plastic chairs, 10 sewing machines and clothing materials for making the face masks for the public.

Presenting the donation to the local women during a ceremony attended by Sultan Mustapha Amgabo and Sub-prefect Zachariah Ramadan among others, Head of Office Bessan Vikou thanked the local women for their efforts in making handmade face masks for the local population. He said that the items donated would not only benefit the women but the entire population of Birao and the peripheral areas and urged the community to look after the items well.

Receiving the donations, Sub-prefect of Birao thanked UNDP and MINUSCA and urged the women to be creative and to immediately start using the donated items for the benefit of the local population.

MINUSCA also handed over two boreholes to Gendarmerie and National army respectively, through the Zambian contingent, to help them have access to sufficient water supply for their personal use.
