7 Jun 2021 - Elements to the press by Gert Auväärt, Deputy Permanent Representative of Estonia and President of the Security Council for the month of June, following closed consultations on the Central African Republic.

The members of the Security Council met on 7 June 2021 and received a briefing from SRSG Ndiaye on the Central African Republic.

The members of the Security Council strongly condemned ongoing human rights violations and abuses and violations of international humanitarian law in the CAR, and stressed the need to bring to justice their perpetrators. They called on all parties to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and ensure safe and unhindered humanitarian access.

The members of the Security Council reiterated the importance of ensuring the full and effective implementation of, and compliance with, the status of forces agreement (SOFA). They also reiterated that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes. They called on the CAR authorities, MINUSCA and all forces present on the ground to coordinate and take all appropriate measures to enhance the safety and security of United Nations peacekeepers and personnel. They reaffirmed their strong support to SRSG Ndiaye and MINUSCA to deliver on its mandate.

The members of the Security Council commended the recent joint visit of the United Nations, the African Union, the Economic Community of Central African States and the European Union in the Central African Republic. They welcomed the commitment of the CAR authorities to engage in an inclusive political dialogue, while strengthening their cooperation with international and regional partners.
