The head of MINUSCA discusses the Central African crisis with the angolan Foreign Minister in Luanda

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the Central African Republic, Babacar Gaye, met on Friday in Luanda the Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs, George Chicoti, to discuss the peace process in the Central African Republic.

The Head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has on this occasion stressed the continued support that Angola has provided as part of the joint efforts to exit the crisis. In this regard, he shared with his interlocutor the progress and challenges faced in the holding of the popular consultations and the restoration of State authority in the Central African Republic.

"In most of the territory, the consultations went well and we support the Government to expand throughout the country and to involve all refugees living in neighboring states," said the Special Representative.

The Head of MINUSCA also expressed the determination of the Mission to assist the Central African Government in the deployment of its administration, and cited the example of Bria where prefects, judges and other officials  were re-installed after United Nations peacekeepers, backed by the French forces Sangaris, reclaimed public buildings which were illegally occupied by ex-Séléka armed groups.

Minister Chicoti welcomed the visit and reiterated the commitment of his country to the return of lasting peace in the Central African Republic. It is for this reason that Angola is closely following the ongoing developments and considers the need to help the authorities of Bangui to complete a successful transition to the benefit of the Central African people.

In addition to its role in the region and Africa, Angola seats on the Security Council as a non-permanent member.
