The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the Central African Republic, Valentine Rugwabiza, was received on Thursday, 25 September by Central African Prime Minister Félix Moloua, as part of regular consultations between the United Nations and the Central African Government.
At the heart of the discussions was the renewal of MINUSCA's mandate, which is set to expire in mid-November. The meeting allowed both parties to take stock of preparations for upcoming discussions at the United Nations Security Council regarding the extension of the mandate.
Valentine Rugwabiza informed the Head of Government of the upcoming presentation of the UN Secretary-General's report on the situation in the Central African Republic and MINUSCA's activities. This document will be reviewed on 20 October by the members of the Security Council.
“I will be presenting the Secretary-General’s report to the members of the Security Council. This October report is generally highly anticipated, as it provides an updated assessment of the situation in the country prior to the opening of discussions on the renewal of MINUSCA’s mandate,” explained the Special Representative.
Discussions also covered the regional and international context, marked by growing security, economic, and health challenges.
“This meeting also allowed me to exchange views with the Prime Minister on the current international and sub-regional situation, as well as its repercussions in the Central African Republic. I was able to learn about the measures put in place by the country to address these various pressures,” indicated Valentine Rugwabiza.
Reaffirming MINUSCA’s commitment alongside Central African authorities, the Special Representative assured the government of the Mission's ongoing support. In particular, she highlighted UN assistance in preparing and strengthening national capacities to counter cross-border health risks, especially those related to the Ebola epidemic affecting certain regions of the continent.
This initiative is part of a dynamic of enhanced cooperation between the Central African Government and the United Nations, both determined to consolidate the progress achieved in the stabilization and development of the Central African Republic.
